Development of a Computer-Controlled Polishing Process for X-Ray Optics
نویسندگان
چکیده
The future X-ray observatory missions require grazing-incidence x-ray optics with angular resolution of < 5 arcsec halfpower diameter. The achievable resolution depends ultimately on the quality of polished mandrels from which the shells are replicated. With an aim to fabricate better shells, and reduce the cost/time of mandrel production, a computercontrolled polishing machine is developed for deterministic and localized polishing of mandrels. Cylindrical polishing software is also developed that predicts the surface residual errors under a given set of operating parameters and lap configuration. Design considerations of the polishing lap are discussed and the effects of nonconformance of the lap and the mandrel are presented.

Optical surfaces can be accurately figured by computer controlled optical surfacing (CCOS) that uses well characterized sub-diameter polishing tools driven by numerically controlled (NC) machines. The motion of the polishing tool is optimized to vary the dwell time of the polisher on the workpiece according to the desired removal and the calibrated tool influence function (TIF). Operating CCOS ...

Computer Controlled Ultra-precision Polishing (CCUP) provides an enabling technology for machining freeform components with optical surface quality (i.e., nanometer surface roughness and sub-micrometer or accuracy). It can be used to machine difficult-to-machine materials such as optical glass which are not amenable for diamond machining. Due to the complexity of material removal mechanism in t...
